What are warts?

Warts on the feet – commonly known as plantar warts – are small, rough growths. They’re stubborn and can make everyday movement uncomfortable, lingering without proper care. Southwest Foot & Ankle Centre provides expert modern plantar wart treatments to help resolve and prevent this frustrating issue from coming back.

Are there different types of warts on feet?

The most common wart found on your feet is a plantar wart caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters through tiny cuts or breaks on the bottom of the feet, typically on weight-bearing areas like the balls or heels. These warts can occur as a single lesion or cluster together in what’s known as ‘mosaic warts’.

You can also be affected by periungual warts which develop around the toenails and fingernails. Like all warts, they are caused by HPV. Periungual warts start small, around the size of a pinhead, but can grow to rough bumps. As they can be persistent, it’s best to receive treatment for this type of wart promptly.

Treatments for plantar warts

While some warts might disappear on their own, many require professional care. This is especially important when the warts are spreading and painful. At Southwest Foot & Ankle Centre, we provide tailored surgical or non-surgical treatment options, including swift microwave therapy.

Swift Microwave therapy

Swift is a breakthrough therapy for treating plantar warts. Using low-dose microwave energy to target HPV-infected skin cells, Swift destroys the wart from the inside out. This is done by stimulating your body’s immune response to react without damaging the surrounding skin.

If you’re tired of persistent warts, swift laser therapy is a brilliant option and does not require cumbersome dressings and only sometimes requires numbing agents.
