Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a progressive condition where structural change and damage occurs in the ligaments and tendons supporting the arch of the foot. Over time, increased weight and gravity cause the foot to become flat. Alternately known as Progressive Flat foot deformity which is caused by repetitive strain to the posterior tibial tendon and ligaments of the arch from overuse in activities such as running, hiking, dancing or walking. Less commonly this injury can be caused by tears and acute damage to the foot and ankle.

If left untreated, PTTD patients can experience severe pain, impaired mobility, and weakness in the foot. Surgical reconstruction to fix flat feet is used as a last resort. If detected early this condition can be well managed and treated through non-surgical options.

Flat Feet Treatments

At Southwest Foot & Ankle Centre, we offer a range of treatments and therapies for flat feet and PTTD to suit your needs best.

Foot & ankle pain management is the most commonly used non-surgical treatment option for posterior tibial tendinopathy. This option gives you a tailored treatment plan which includes analgesics, exercise rehabilitation, taping, bracing or splinting devices.

Orthotics are also a proven and very effective treatment for flat feet. Orthotics provide support for the arch of the foot where the ankle ligaments fail to do so. This treatment can slow the deterioration of the post-tibial tendon or resolve the pain and discomfort associated with the condition completely.

If required, injection therapy, most commonly cortisone injections, can be used to treat acute pain, and inflammation which are common symptoms of flat foot deformity.

Flat foot surgery is used as a last resort option however, can be effective in relieving debilitating symptoms for patients. This may include reconstructive tendon, ligament or joint surgery but may also include the Hyprocure procedure.

Hyprocure Procedure

The Hyprocure procedure is an effective method of flat foot treatment. It’s minimally invasive and works to reposition the ankle by way of a small stent placed to support the ankle bone. The stent works to support ankle movement for weight to be evenly distributed on the heel and ball of the foot which will correct the arch of the foot.

The procedure is relatively quick, and only requires a small incision in the ankle, so the patient can comfortably return home not long after the procedure.

Flat Foot Surgery Recovery

After your surgery, you will be discharged from the hospital on the same day of your procedure pending any complications. Depending on the nature of the procedure will depend on what you will be able to do following the procedure.

You will be given a comprehensive rehabilitation program combined with rest to help you get back on your feet in no time.

While swelling and pain are expected post-surgery, they can be well managed with elevation, anti-inflammatory and pain medications where needed.

Flat foot surgery costs are covered by private health insurance funds, however, the level of health fund rebate depends on your fund and level of cover.
